 In Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), also known as second units or garden suites, are permitted in urban and rural areas. These units can be located within detached, semi-detached, or townhouse dwellings. 

 

The City of Sault Ste. Marie is actively working to increase housing options, including exploring the potential of bungalow courts and other innovative housing types.

    • Permitted in various dwelling types: ADUs can be part of the main house, a garage, or a separate structure on the property.

    • Part of the Housing Action Plan: The city’s Housing Action Plan aims to increase the housing supply, streamline the approval process, and collaborate with stakeholders to address housing challenges.
    • Funding and incentives: Sault Ste. Marie is receiving federal funding to accelerate housing construction, including incentives for new housing developments.
    • Public engagement: The city encourages public input and participation in shaping housing policies and regulations.

Additional Information: The Ontario Building Code sets standards for Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs), including size, access, and safety requirements. 

    • Shape the Sault: The Shape the Sault initiative is working on updates to the city’s Official Plan and Zoning By-law to address housing needs.
    • Bungalow Courts: The city is also exploring the potential of bungalow courts, a type of development in which multiple dwelling units are physically separated on a single property.
